Several islands lie off shore Cozumel, Isla Mujeres, Isla Holbox, and Contoy. The fifth largest reef in the world, the Belize Reef, extends from the tip of Isla Mujeres 250 kilometers south of the bay of Honduras. Many varieties of coral, including rare black coral which is found at great depths, grow in the hills and valleys of the often-deep reef that protects Quintana Roo.
